Stuck in the 90s | Plaid Dress Fashion

PlaidDress

90s

Plaid shirts and dresses remind me of the 90s. It’s nostalgic and surprisingly uncanny.

Like Kate Moss, we’re stuck in the 90s. Some 90s kids feel superior, it’s not surprising at all. Perhaps it’s because we’re made to believe that we had better music, movies and experiences as compared to other kids born in different era.

The 90s is full of nostalgia. It makes you yearn for those 90s music you hear on the radio back when YouTube didn’t exist. 90s fashion will surely remind you of Spice Girls, Oasis, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine or Hum. Intense yearning that is.

Thank you Hum for your Little Dipper.

Plaid Fashion

I’m wearing my American Eagle Outfitters flannel plaid dress under my black Zara dress. Styling plaid shirts is just too easy. You can wear any under dress or shirt as long as it’s plain,  not checkered or plaid. Being over plaid just can’t be justified.

Cherilyn “Cher” Horowitz played by my favorite 90s celebrity Alicia Silverstone (one of the 90s fashion icon), wore a yellow plaid skirt in one of the episodes of the TV show “Clueless”.

Fashion Socks And All The Frills

I feel nostalgic. Frilly socks or bobby socks can bring such a very terrible nostalgia. Lace socks remind me of school girls back in the 90s who classically wore their frilly socks and loafers or a pair of Mary Janes. Today lacy socks and knee high socks are common even for girls who aren’t school girls anymore.

Nike Jordan

White socks appear vintage and most girls traditionally wear them with their Mary Janes or boots. Let me do the honor to break that tradition. I’m wearing my frilly socks with my pair of Air Jordan shoes and I feel amazing, like what Alex feels each time he drinks that milk plus with something else.

i

I’m wearing my Doc Martens 1461 Cherry Red Smooth paired with my ribbon ruffle socks. In 1950s, most girls wore their lacy socks with their loafers or Oxfords for the socks to be visible because your socks are basically a part of your whole outfit.

White socks are conventional, they’re fascinating though. The best thing about white socks is that you can pair them with any type of shoes. It’s interesting how white socks remind me of the Korova Milk Bar where Alex and his droogs drink milk mixed with something else. Ahh, the horrorshow groodies.

I’m wearing my Dr. Martens Mary Jane shoes. Mary Janes were extremely popular in the 90s, along with chunky heels and creepers. I remember wearing my first platform sneakers when I was ten or eleven years old. You wear the sneakers or you don’t wear anything.

Lace socks

I’m showing off my Mary Janes from Doc Martens and my frilly socks that I got from Topshop. Topshop has a variety of socks for boots, ankle socks and frilly socks that are available in different pastel colors – purple, black, green, pink etc. They are made of cotton. I prefer cotton socks, they’re really comfortable and won’t hurt your feet at all. It’s as though you’re walking on the clouds or something. Clouds make me feel sleepy too, like the way grasses do.

I love socks with very cute designs and laces. There is a strong feeling of euphoria and nostalgia each time I see cute socks. Back in the 90s, I remember teenagers wearing knee high colorful socks with dyed hair. Socks are undeniably another fashion tool to show your fashion style.

Top Four Movies That Will Change You Forever

Some movies are made to entertain or inspire you while others are meant to destroy you or blow your mind away.

1. The Outsiders (1983)

GREASERS-the-outsiders-8219435-1405-945

What the movie is all about

The film concentrated on the life of Ponyboy as an orphan and a Greaser and how he, and the other young Greasers in his neighborhood were torn between two groups: the Greasers and Socs.

Greasers vs Socs

The movie is a reminder that groups or communities shouldn’t label and define us as individuals. The conflict between the Greasers and Socs was evident and could be influenced by class and social distinction.

If you’re a Greaser, you should be wearing black leather jackets, jeans with greasy hair and should be living in a poor neighborhood. You should be tough; and because you’re labeled as a poor guy who creates all the trouble in the neighborhood, then you’ll be the prime suspect in every crime in your town. If you’re a Socs, you’re supposed to be living in a nice neighborhood with nice cars, nice clothes and a bright future. And you don’t steal, you can do everything you want because it’s easy for you to get away from almost anything. That’s labeling.

Stay Gold

The first scene of the movie showed Ponyboy getting out of the movie theater. He was just a regular guy who liked watching movies and reading books. But because he was born in a low income working class family surrounded by a not a so nice neighborhood, he was labelled as a Greaser.

Before Johnny died, he told Ponyboy to stay gold, to stay young and innocent and not grow up fast. To stay young is to be passionate and ideal. To stay innocent is to see the goodness in everybody and being positive. But then, as the title of the Robert Frost’s poem goes, “nothing gold can stay.”

Favorite Lines

Johnny Cade: I think I like it better when the old man’s hittin’ me. At least he knows I’m there.

Ponyboy Curtis: Johnny’s dead. Told him about beating the socs, I don’t know. He just died. Told me to stay gold. Dally’s gone. He couldn’t take it, he’s going to blow!

2. Sleepers (1996)

6443556b510c73fdf6a4e36e7bd8f102_80486

What the movie is all about

The important part of the story started in the summer of 1967 when four boys Tommy, Michael, John and Shakes were sentenced to serve 12 to 18 months at the Wilkinson Home for Boys where they were sexually abused by the prison guards.

Revenge Movie

The film tells a story about justified revenge. The violent and rape scenes force the viewers to unconsciously justify the killing of the prison guard and the tricks they played during the court hearings.

What is disturbing is that we unconsciously agree and justify their actions because the characters have already earned our sympathy. Our ability to empathize and sympathize urge us to feel hungry for revenge.

Favorite Lines

Lorenzo:
Mike, are you sure you wanna go this way? I mean we buried this a long time ago.

Michael:
You still sleep with the light on?

Michael:
You read the Count of Monte Cristo lately?

Lorenzo:
I dunno, 10 years ago

Michael:
I read a little bit every night. I read words like revenge, sweet, lasting revenge.

3. This Boy’s Life (1993)

ThisBoysLife(V2)2.jpg

What the story is about

It’s a story about the life of a boy and how he struggled through adolescence, being an emotional support of his single mom and dealing with his step father’s abuse.

Women as wallpapers

The movie talked about male domination. There was a power struggle between the boy and the step dad. The depressing part of the movie was the fact that in those times, women were merely wallpapers; they weren’t allowed to have voices and be freed.

Toby Wollf’s mother was portrayed as a desperate woman who could not survive without a man. The story was also focused on Toby and who struggled his way through adolescence – with a single mother who had failed relationships and constantly seeking the emotional support of a man and realizing that they needed to be free from his step dad’s abuse and insecurity.

Favorite Lines

Tobias ‘Toby’ Wolff: Sometimes I had to blame somebody; she was the only one there.

Tobias ‘Toby’ Wolff: Mom, you can leave too, I’m leaving, you don’t have to stay here for this shit.

Caroline Wolff Hansen: I don’t, do I?

Tobias ‘Toby’ Wolff: No, you don’t!

Caroline Wolff Hansen: I could leave with you right now, couldn’t I?

Tobias ‘Toby’ Wolff: Yes, you could.

Caroline Wolff Hansen: I could walk right out that door, couldn’t I?

Tobias ‘Toby’ Wolff: Yes!

Dwight Hansen: What?

Caroline Wolff Hansen: I’m leaving you, Dwight.

4. The Great Gatsby

the_great_gatsby_movie-wide

What the movie is about

The movie was about the splendid and luxurious life of the mysterious guy named Gatsby as told by another main character and his efforts to win back his old girlfriend who already had a family of her own.

The Green Light

The movie could destroy you forever. Watching the movie can cause grief and misery for a couple of months.

The green light symbolized Daisy and Gatsby’s dream to be with her. Like the light, she seemed near yet so far. The movie didn’t really emphasize love, but madness and terrible longing and the story was told in the point of view of the narrator.

Daisy – The Beautiful Fool

Daisy was also portrayed as a beautiful woman who was able to get what she wanted merely because she was beautiful, that’s it. She had no character; she was hollow. Her lack of character and all those women in Gatsby’s parties could make you feel sick.

Favorite Lines

“They’re a rotten crowd. You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”

Nick Carraway: Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning – So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Daisy Buchanan: I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.

Nick Carraway: In my younger and more vulnerable years, my father gave me some advice. “Always try to see the best in people,” he would say. As a consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgements. But even I have a limit.

How To Wear Your High-Waisted Skinny Jeans

We’re bringing back the fashion in the old days – skater skirts, retro vintage, mom jeans and everything high-waisted. In fact, it’s more economical to search for your mom’s old clothes. You might get lucky and find something like your mom’s high waisted shorts, flared trousers or vintage dresses.

High-waisted skinny jeans are usually paired with crop tops. The main purpose is to specifically display and show off its perfect fit on your waist – after all, high waisted jeans are designed to be higher than your navel. Finding the right tops for my jeans is a difficult task for me. ZALORA has a wide selection of women’s fashion. I love their tops.

Topshop Joni Jeans

Joni

I’m wearing my Topshop Joni Jeans paired with my laced top and Forever21 black platform sandals. The color of my top blends well with my pink super high waisted jeans. This pair is stretchy and comfortable and stretchy jeans are the best jeans for curvy women.

Ribbed crop tops would look chunky too. If you want to wear something basic yet still look cute at the same time, you’ll surely adore Topshop’s skinny rib crop tops in blue, biege, pink and all the lovely pastel colors in the world.

I paired my Levi’s High Rise with a long sleeved tie front crop top and my Dr. Martens Mary Jane shoes. Though high rise and high-waisted jeans are different, their differences often go unnoticed.

Levi’s Mom Jeans

Some girls might find mom jeans tacky. I think it’s an interesting fashion revival though . I adore the idea of wearing something that would remind me of the 90s, back when my aunt still wore mom jeans and it was in the late 90s when I first saw Axl Rose on TV basically because I was born in the late 80s.

Mom jeans aren’t for your mom anymore.  You can actually wear it with your Dr. Martens or platforms. Pair it with a plaid crop top or knitted sweater. I must remind you, don’t forget your vintage tees. Another thing: don’t be a fashion terrorist.

While Taylor Swift prefers high-waisted shorts, Miley Cyrus is into high rise jeans and mom jeans. In the photo, Miley is wearing her acid washed mom jeans with her semi corset top and black flats. I think this outfit works not because she’s Miley Cyrus and she can wear anything, but because the whole outfit reminds me of the 90s. Well, 90s fashion is awesomeastic.

mileyyyyyyyyy

The revival of high-waisted jeans is a response to the revival of low waist skinny jeans. And the evolution of fashion also becomes an evolution for most trusted denim companies that target young men and women who are into jeans and fashion. At the end of the day, we are all the same – hungry consumers.

TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer Review

How many times have you ever felt heartbroken over some overpriced face bronzers, lipsticks or make up brush sets? Expensive beauty cosmetics are such lovely heart breakers. And in my quest to find the cheap yet best face highlighter, I found TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer.

TheBalm Photo 3

TheBalm Photo

TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer aka “The Luminizer” is an all around honey hued highlighter. You can use it on your eyelids, on the apple of your cheeks, under your eyes and above your brows. You can also apply it on the bridge of your nose. Basically, it aims to enhance your skin, rather than to mask or conceal it.

TheBalm

I feel obliged to take as many photos as possible. In the first photo, the dark circles around my eyes are a bit unnoticeable. I didn’t apply any eye concealer, just my Naturactor Cover Face.

TheBalm 22

Why I love it

  • It’s cheaper but it works like any other branded highlighters in the store

  • It contains a ton of product (like seriously) that you won’t be buying another one anytime soon

  • It really shimmers and brightens your face as long as you know the right places to highlight

  • It hides the dark circles around my eyes

  • The packaging is cool and edgy plus it comes with a big mirror

  • It’s easy to use especially for beginners

  • It’s a 3 in 1 product: you can use it on your cheeks, eyelids or under your eyes or brows. Its works as a highlighter, eyeshadow and shimmer powder.

Why I dislike it

  • (If you like online shopping and you happened to buy it online, even if it’s carefully wrapped) There’s a big chance that if the product is delivered, it would spill like loose powder. Though it looks compact, it does have the tendency to spill out into lid when you put it inside your bag. This is the reason why I can’t bring it anywhere I go.

Tip

  • Apply it using a brush and blend

  • If you have dark circles around your eyes like me, then take advantage of its shimmer to achieve a youthful look

Recommendation

I’ve tried Benefit High Beam and it works okay. My Mary-Lou Manizer works perfectly fine and it doesn’t cost a lot. Whether you’re an expert when it comes to highlighting or still a beginner, this highlighter is one of the best highlighters today. For $24 (1032php), it’s a great steal.

Contouring became extremely popular because of Kim Kardashian. Bronzers and highlighters can completely change how you look. Make up can do magic, it doesn’t matter if you’re using drugstore or designer make up. If applied properly, highlighters can actually make your face glow to make you look younger and healthier. And so far, my Mary-Lou Manizer is doing a pretty good job.

How To Take Care Of Your Jeans

I don’t buy denim jeans too often. But when I do, it must be the best pair.  Paying for the best jeans is easy, looking for the best pair takes hours or worst, days. That’s why it’s perfectly reasonable to take good care of your pairs and keep them in good shape.  I’m not a denim jeans guru since I don’t wear them much but I must say I’ve learned a thing or two from my relationships with denim clothing.

I prefer Cheap Monday jeans or Levis high waisted pants. I own a few pairs of high waist jeans and the most difficult part is to preserve them – to maintain their original fit and color.

Denim

(Warning: If you’re a woman, let me warn you that this next tip might be too disgusting for you)

Wash your jeans only once or twice a month.  Yes, I know, it might sound too unhygienic especially for girls, but it’s okay you’ll get over it.  If you wash them too often, expect the colors to fade.  Another advantage of washing it once or thrice a month is that the denim eventually adopts the shape of your body- that’s why I buy skinny jeans that are tighter.

Tip:

If you really want to wash your denim because you’re easily bothered by the thought of having bacteria on your jeans and you try to be hygienic as possible, here’s a piece of advice:  FREEZE YOUR JEANS. Brush your jeans off, place them in plastic bags and toss them in the freezer. Yes, it won’t take the stain out but it’s one way to kill the bacteria and keep your denim intact.

DSC_1313

I was born in a third world country, normally we use the stain brush to take the dirt off. We don’t have laundry machines everywhere, yes that’s a fact. But we have lots of laundry shops destined to destroy your jeans. If possible, try hand washing.

Mild hand washing is highly recommended.  As I’ve read in some articles, it’s also helpful to add some vinegar to cold water when you hand wash your jeans. Trust Science. Machine wash is too risky for your denim, unless you want to minimize your garment’s life span.

Whether your jeans are acid washed, stonewashed, low rise, mid rise, raw or indigo, their lifespan depends on how well you care for them.  Be a darling.

fd

Recommendation

If you like high waisted skinny jeans, you can check Topshop’s Joni Jeans for £36.00 (or 2800php) (ripped skinny jeans are also available) or Levis’ High Rise skinny jeans for women in stores. You can get them for $88.00 (or 2400php).  They’re super stretchy and comfortable.
